Job description


Teachers are required to teach up to an average of 25 timetabled contact hours a week to classes or individuals, both on and off-site. Class sizes vary from 4 to 12 students on-site and up to 16 (or occasionally more) at off-site locations.


  • Fluent Scuola operates from 08.00 to 22.00 Monday to Friday and from 08.00 to 13.00 on Saturdays. Due to the nature of the working day in Italy, teachers are likely to be deployed on a split shift with classes in the morning and in the afternoon and/or evening.
  • Under-deployed teachers may be allocated to cover teaching and other academic duties, such as placement testing, materials development and course preparation.

Non-classroom teaching activities

Teachers are also required to undertake the following teaching-related tasks:

  • Plan and prepare courses they are assigned to teach
  • Prepare lessons to a standard representative of the school
  • Assess, record and report in detail on the development, progress and attainment of students
  • Provide ongoing support and guidance to students and counsel students who are experiencing difficulties
  • Mark homework and tests
  • Keep accurate attendance and work records, and keep to deadlines for reports, tests and time-sheets
  • Report more than two student absences to admin staff for follow up
  • Adhere to matters of dress, grooming and behaviour, such as punctuality and professional standards
  • Report to the Academic Coordinator on any student problems, complaints, grievances, or suggestions that may arise
  • Maintain cleanliness of the school. Check classrooms are tidy both before and after class
  • Treat all Fluent Scuola materials, facilities and resources with respect and report any damage or breakages to Academic Coordinator or School Manager

Other activities

  • Assist in the design and development of courses and course materials under the direction of the Academic Coordinator, as required
  • Participate in the regular ongoing evaluation of courses and end-of-course reviews in order to contribute to continuous improvement and course development processes
  • Advise and co-operate with the Academic Coordinator and colleagues on the development of methods of teaching and assessment
  • Participate in extra-curricular activities organised by Fluent Scuola
  • Contribute to discussions and plan activities to support programme development
  • Support Fluent Scuola marketing and promotional activities

Review: further training and development

  • Attend and participate in workshops and other professional development activities
  • Regularly review his/her methods of teaching and participate in arrangements for his/her further training and professional development to ensure quality and high standards in learning and teaching


  • Participate in arrangements for the appraisal of his/her performance
  • Participate in exit interviews at the end of contract

Staff meetings

  • Participate in meetings which relate to the curriculum or the administration or organisation of Fluent Scuola, as required


  • Any other reasonable duties as assigned by the Academic Coordinator or School Manager

Salary & benefits

  • Teachers are allocated salaries on a 10-step scale depending on interview, performance, qualifications and experience. Salaries range from 400 – 800 euros take home per month and this is take-home. No other costs incurred.
  • Excellent shared accommodation is provided and paid for by the school in a centrally-located and re-furbished apartment just a few minutes walk from the school, and the old town centre. All utilities/wifi are covered.
  • Teachers receive an induction programme upon arrival with on-going observations and support, as required. Familiarisation with our established courses and exam prep classes is provided and guidance on the development of supplementary materials is available to all teachers.
  • As a Cambridge Exams Preparation Centre we can help suitably qualified teachers become official examiners or exam invigilators.
  • Two school vehicles available on request for use by teachers at weekends allowing them to explore the area.

Job requirements

  • Positive, creative and flexible approach to teaching over a broad age-range of students (personal teaching strengths accommodated, where possible).
  • Enthusiasm to work in a team and share ideas.
  • CELTA / Trinity (Cert) TESOL or equivalent with experience, is preferred. Online courses including some observed feedback also accepted. Knowledge of the Cambridge English exams is valued – Young Learners, KET, PET, FCE & CAE.
  • Ability to speak Italian can be advantageous for children’s classes and beginners, but not essential.
  • A clean driving licence and a willingness to drive is of considerable value, but not essential.

All applicants must hold a passport which permits employment in the EU. All applicants are required to have native-level English language proficiency (IELTS 8.5 – 9.0, or evidence of native-level proficiency is required)
