ESL Program Coordinator– Job Description
The Tanzanian Children’s Fund is seeking a native English speaker with at least two years of ESOL/ESL/ELL experience and at least one year of training experience to work for the Rift Valley Children’s Fund in rural Tanzania. Our ESL Program Coordinator will play a key role within RVCF’s Education Department to improve the English Language competency of students as well as equip teachers with the skills and knowledge to be high quality teachers in English Language across multiple Education Faculties in the Oldeani Ward (Pre-Primary, Primary and Secondary).
Founded by India Howell and Peter Leon Mmassy in 2004, the Rift Valley Children’s Village operates in partnership with the Tanzanian Children’s Fund (TCF) and is a loving and permanent home to 102 children. RVCV is located in a remote and impoverished village in the Karatu District, adjacent to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area.
The primary goal of this position is to build teachers’ capacity to teach English and students’ ability to learn English in order to bring about greater learning outcomes for students, positioning them for future educational and professional success. There will also be a secondary component requiring you to teach students directly and also model effective teaching and learning strategies to various education stakeholders in Oldeani Ward.
The specifics of this job include but are not limited to:
Training and Teacher Development – (60% of role)
- Developing, preparing and delivering RVCF’s new Accelerator Teacher Training Program for English teachers at our four partner government schools to improve English Language teaching and learning practices. This program includes;
- Working in close unison with the School Leadership in our partner schools to identify the needs of the school community in relation to English Learning.
- Planning and conducting four teacher training seminars per year that focus on creating an inclusive learning environment for students of all levels.
- Preparing and delivering two-month training follow up cycles providing concise and timely assessment of training effectiveness through regular classroom observations, coaching and tracking students’ learning progress.
- As required co-teaching with English teachers to model key teaching and learning strategies.
- Devising, writing and producing new ESL teaching and learning materials to support English teachers to reach their training objectives.
- Producing a report at the end of each two-month training cycle to show effectiveness of teacher training seminars and coaching.
English Language Teaching – (30% of role)
- Planning and leading a Pre-form 1 course to prepare primary school graduates for the transition to secondary school.
- As required, advise RVCV volunteers and other staff members on appropriate English Language educational resources and activities for various age groups.
- Supporting students who are on RVCF education scholarships with their English Language by teaching two-hour weekly English sessions when needed.
- Assisting school leadership in our partner schools to develop effective remedial programs for students in English Language learning.
- Supporting leadership in our partner schools to ensure school libraries are used effectively and students adopt effective reading strategies.
- As required, support RVCV’s Volunteer Coordinator and Director of Education in the development of English Language teaching at RVCF pre-primary education facilities.
Other – (10% of role)
- As required, support with proofreading, printing examination papers and proctoring tests.
- As required, support with running activities at RVCV for kids for example Saturday clubs and life skills.
- As required, leading and creating resources for extra-curricular school activities for example clubs, gender equality discussions, sports etc.
- As required, assist in preparing important school events for example graduation, school trips, teacher and student appreciation events, etc.
Salary & benefits
Benefits:
- $650 monthly stipend
- $2,000 airfare allowance/year
- Room and Board including private apartment, all meals, internet, local phone, and housekeeping support; transport to town as needed. Please note that our Room and Board package only accommodates the individual candidate

Job requirements
Our ideal candidate is someone who:
- Is a native English speaker
- Can commit to one year of living and working in a remote area
- Takes initiative in a professional environment with minimal supervision
- Has at least one-year experience in developing and leading trainings
- Has experience in coaching individuals to reach their goals
- Has earned a Bachelor’s Degree and a teaching certification for TEFL
- Has a minimum of 2 years teaching experience
- Has worked/studied/lived overseas or taught in cross-cultural contexts
- Has experience in creating needs-based curricula and syllabi
- Possesses a strong work ethic
